    An investigation of dermatitis and subsequent hair loss revealed that hair colorants containing monoethanolamines (MEAs) with hyrdrogen peroxide, induce oxidative stress and cell toxicity in human hair. This study compared ammonia-based colorants to colorants with non ammonia alternatives called monoethanolamines (MEA). The results affirmed that using the non ammonia colorants can cause hair loss over time with repeated exposure and that minimal quantities of ammonia in hair colorants are considered not-toxic. Each year, ACDS publishes an “Allergen of the Year.” In 2006, the allergen was p-phenylenediamine (PPD)—a chemical substance widely used as a permanent hair dyes although also commonly found in fur dyes, temporary tattoos, photographic developer, black rubber, oils, greases, gasoline, and photocopying and printing inks.
